Who We Are
Uncover a Storied Hideaway
When early settlers arrived on Grand Cayman’s shoreline in 1503, they were greeted by an abundance of wildlife – most notably turtles, for which the islands - “Las Tortugas” - were named. The island saw its first permanent settlement in the 1700s, and as years passed, it became a requisite port-of-call along key trade routes, inviting the influence of the world beyond. Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman continues to celebrate our island’s vibrant history of seafaring explorers, who built a community and kinship that endures to this very day.

The Caymanian Way
From the moment it was settled, Grand Cayman’s wild landscape demanded exceptional ingenuity. Relics of this self-reliance can still be found in any number of the island’s historic wattle and daub buildings. These colorful structures display local expertise and craft, telling a story of resourcefulness across generations, and of a people and an island forever linked.
Read moreOur hotel is a rich celebration of Caymanian identity, inspired by the island’s one-of-a-kind traditions and way of life. Caymanian identity, however, can’t be neatly summarized by the island’s dialect or its vernacular architecture. It’s a culture of propriety and tradition, rooted in a livelihood made on the water.
As steamships replaced sailboats in the early 1900s, Caymanians gazed towards the sea. “Sailorizing,” as they called it, became the mainstay of the island’s economy. Those who didn’t take up posts abroad carried on the tradition of turtling or shipbuilding closer to shore. At this time, the island’s community continued to grow, and the Bath House on Seven Mile Beach served as its bedrock.
The Bath House was a place where Caymanians and visitors could change from their formal street clothes into bathing attire before swimming in the ocean. This landmark quickly became a social hub, hosting beach picnics, potlucks, and festivals. It’s where the community convened to enjoy the natural beauty of the beach and the Caribbean Sea, while teenagers would use it to host beach parties in the moonlight.
As development began on Seven Mile Beach in the late 1950s, the Bath House grew dilapidated. It was eventually razed to build the Governor’s House, which remains today. No matter how it’s changed, Seven Mile Beach is still the nucleus of life on the island, providing a beautiful destination for all to come together.
